Please help me with this poem. What the poem is all about?

For Edda (Hillary Tham)



I would I were a god…

that I might tip the immortal scales

in your favour

in life’s encounters.

I would have your life beautiful

With many flowers and evergreen grass

And the glory of love;

And the tranquillity of deep waters.



But since I am not a god

Being only mortal, as you are,

I would give you all I can :

The warmth of love when you are tired

and chilled from sorrowful winds,

a hand in choosing a monsoon drain;

and I would sing you songs

picking for you a rock or flower especially beautiful,

as we wander in the drying grass;

And we shall dance together when the rains come

Our glad voices filling the rain-dampened sky.

Please help me with this poem. What the poem is all about?
The speaker is trying to express his love. He is saying that he wishes he could make the life of his love perfect. He realizes he doesn't have that power, so he offers his love a shoulder to cry on. By saying "And we shall dance together when the rain comes" he means that he will stand by his love through the hard times in life. Picking a beautiful rock or flower in the grass could be symbolic of him reminding his love of the good things in life. Basically, the speaker is offering to support his love.
Reply:It is simply a love poem sayin that seeing as i don't have the power to give you all that you want, i will give you all that i can.
Reply:I guess its trying to say that the writer is just an ordinary human being trying to express love.

Reply:stanza 1 says: if he were a god he would use his powers to make the girl he is talking about as happy and beautiful as possible.



Stanza 2 but since he isnt a god he is going to do all that he can under any circumstances to make her happy .. in better times and worse times
Reply:Throw it in the trash and give it more thought. Your imagery is all over the place, you have not rhyme or meter, and you could lose the whole God and Man thing all together. It is not romantic. Just start over. I would.
