How do I preserve a flower?

My father just passed away and I took a flower from his casket spray and I want to preserve it and put it in a frame/shadow box. My sister just used this drying kit on hers (this white grainy stuff that you set the flower in...?) but it changed the color from bright orange to burgandy. It is the only flower I have from the spray and I REALLY can't risk messing it up. There is one place near us that will freeze dry it, but it costs nearly $200 for a single flower!!! Help!

How do I preserve a flower?
Michael's has a great product for this exact situation. Good Luck!!!
Reply:I have had luck with spray shellack or spray varnish. A couple of light coats, let them dry befor you give second coat. Try this on a few odd flowers and see if it works for you.

I also press flowers in a book and let them dry and they keep their color, but are brittle.
Reply:Place the flower in a book between two slices of paper they way you want to see it in the frame. Then you would just shut the book and press it over night or for a couple of days. That should press the flower flat enough for you.
